What to pack for a high-altitude trek: complete Salkantay packing list

ES By Equipo Salkantay Go 1 min read

The packing list our guides use: layers, footwear, first-aid kit, documents and what you can rent in Cusco.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Dress in layers: base, mid and waterproof outer.
  • Wear broken-in boots.
  • Bring your original passport and cash in soles.
  • Mules carry up to 7 kg per person.

On Salkantay you can go from −5 °C at the high camp to 25 °C in the jungle on the same trek. The key is not to pack a lot, but to pack right. This is the list we recommend to our travelers.

Clothing: the layering system

  • Base layer: 2 thermal or quick-dry shirts (avoid cotton).
  • Mid layer: fleece or light down jacket.
  • Outer layer: waterproof, windproof jacket.
  • 2 trekking pants (one can be convertible).
  • Wool hat, sun cap, gloves and buff.
  • 3–4 pairs of trekking socks.

Footwear

Broken-in trekking boots with good grip and ankle support, plus sandals for camp. Never wear new boots on the trek.

Gear

  • 25–30 L daypack with rain cover.
  • Sleeping bag rated to −10 °C (you can rent one from us).
  • Headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended for descents).
  • 2 L water bottle or hydration bladder.

Personal first-aid kit

  • Your personal medication.
  • SPF 50 sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent.
  • Blister plasters, painkillers and rehydration salts.

Documents and money

  • Original passport (mandatory for Machu Picchu and the train).
  • Valid student card if you booked a student rate.
  • Cash in soles for toilets, snacks, hot springs and tips.
Remember: mules carry up to 7 kg of your things. Everything else can stay at your hotel in Cusco.
